Florence crowned Queen of Festival at 102

Lord Mayor of Manchester crowns Florence the Queen of this years Festival

Levenshulme resident Florence Stockwin was crowned Queen of the Levenshulme Festival as she celebrated her 102nd birthday, during this years Levenshulme Festival.

The Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Alison Firth paid Florence a surprise visit on Sunday 1 November along with local Levenshulme councillors Keith Whitmore, John Commons and Alec Cowain.

They joined family members and friends in having a cup of tea and a piece of birthday cake with Florence in the family home and officially crown the sprightly pensioner the ‘Queen of the Festival’.
The festival is celebrating its own centenary of the village becoming a part of Manchester.

Festival co-ordinator James Hennigan said “Florence’s birthday is always one of the highlights of the annual festival and this year it is even more special as Florence is probably one of the few people that can remember when the village joined Manchester in 1909.

She is a much loved member of the community and it is great to see her looking so well, it must have something to do with the climate in Levenshulme.”

Florence’s neighbour Alan Boud said "It is wonderful at 102 that Florence is still able to live in her own home. We all enjoy having her as our neighbour and are always there to help out when needed."

Cllr John Commons said “Mrs Stockwin is an extremely well respected member of our local Levenshulme community and we are very grateful to the Lord Mayor for joining the local councillors and her family and friends in celebrating her very special birthday.”
